Point Cloud Infrastructure Analysis
Honours thesis on using point cloud data and open-source tools to predict hazards in buildings
The Problem
Assessing structural hazards in buildings traditionally requires manual inspection — expensive, time-consuming, and subjective. Point cloud data from LiDAR scanning offers a way to automate hazard detection, but existing tools were proprietary and expensive.
What I Built
Developed an open-source approach to point cloud analysis of infrastructure systems for my honours thesis at UTS. The system processes 3D scanned building data to identify and predict potential structural hazards.
Results
Awarded 1st Class Honours. The thesis demonstrated that open-source tools can achieve comparable results to proprietary solutions for infrastructure hazard prediction from point cloud data.
